How Good Is Ryzen 9 5950x For Gaming?

We all know that gaming is a category everyone is looking for before buying any parts for their computer, especially the processor or graphics card. Considering that, I will try to test this processor with the best graphics card I own in 3 main resolutions: 1080p, 1440p, and 4k.

I tested the same 5 games in all resolutions so you can see the difference between them.

Let’s cut the story and jump into some gaming!

How Good Is Ryzen 9 5950x For Gaming in 1080p?

When it comes to gaming, 1080p is the most popular resolution. Although it’s the easiest to run for graphics cards, you will need a good processor in order to get good results.

Since a lot of people are using 1080p monitors, this test will be important, Also, in higher resolution, the graphics card is doing most of the work, so the CPU won’t be that important.

As you can see below, in all 5 games that I tested this CPU-GPU combination achieved well above 60 fps even tho the games were on the highest graphics details most of the time.

The biggest surprise for me was Red Ded Redemption and ARK since I got above 130 fps in both of them on the highest possible graphics. That means that you can easily play on a 144 Hz monitor with the highest possible details and get the most out of it.

The lowest fps that I got was in Assassin’s Creed Valhalla, which is expected since that game isn’t as optimized as other ones.

Take a look at the table yourself!

specs: Ryzen 9 5950x, RTX 3090, 32Gb DDR4, 1TB SSD - res:1080p AVERAGE FPS 1% LOW FPS
Red Dead Redemption 2 (Ultra settings - 1080p) 136 fps 102 fps
Ghostrunner (Epic settings - 1080p) 124 fps 81 fps
Assassin's Creed Valhalla (Ultra High settings - 1080p) 91 fps 73 fps
ARK Survival (Epic settings - 1080p) 142 fps 115 fps
Mafia: Definitive Edition (High settings - 1080p) 209 fps 129 fps

Ryzen 9 5950x and RTX 3090 in 1440?

The second resolution in which I tested this processor was 1440p or 2k. I also used a powerful RTX 3090 as in the previous resolution, in order to get the best results.

Have in mind that in 2k, the graphics card is the component that is a little bit more important, so if you don’t have one as good as me, you will probably get fewer frames per second.

As you can see in the table below, even with the same graphics details as in 1080p resolution, Ryzen 9 5950x and RTX 3090 got very good results in every game.

There wasn’t a single title that averaged under 60 fps, which is very good considering that these games were maxed out in 2k resolution.

Mafia Definitive Edition got around 170 frames per second on High settings, which is more than enough for anyone. Assassin’s Creed Valhalla dropped under 60 fps a few times, but still got an average of 73 fps.

Let’s cut the story and take a look at the table!

specs: Ryzen 9 5950x, RTX 3090, 32Gb DDR4, 1TB SSD - res:1440p AVERAGE FPS 1% LOW FPS
Red Dead Redemption 2 (Ultra settings - 1440p) 115 fps 87 fps
Ghostrunner (Epic settings - 1440p) 117 fps 73 fps
Assassin's Creed Valhalla (Ultra High settings - 1440p) 73 fps 52 fps
ARK Survival (Epic settings - 1440p) 90 fps 69 fps
Mafia: Definitive Edition (High settings - 1440p) 170 fps 106 fps

How Good Is Ryzen 9 5950x For Gaming In 4k?

And the most important resolution for everyone that is ready to spend this amount for a PC, 4k.

As I said before, in 4k your CPU won’t be that important, but I still decided to benchmark these games since a lot of people will play in 4k resolution anyway.

If you take a look at the table below, you can see that I kept the same graphics details in most of the games. Considering that they were maxed out, you should totally expect to get higher fps if you play with the settings and graphics details.

Only ARK and AC Valhalla were under 60 fps on average, which is completely expected since I played them on Epic and Ultra settings.

The other 3 games were more than a good experience.

Take a look at the table yourself!

specs: Ryzen 9 5950x, RTX 3090, 32Gb DDR4, 1TB SSD - res:4k AVERAGE FPS 1% LOW FPS
Red Dead Redemption 2 (Ultra settings - 4k) 79 fps 65 fps
Ghostrunner (Epic settings - 4k) 72 fps 50 fps
Assassin's Creed Valhalla (Ultra High settings - 4k) 56 fps 38 fps
ARK Survival (Epic settings - 4k) 55 fps 46 fps
