Is AMD Ryzen 9 5900x Good For Gaming?

Topic Introduction

Less than 2 years ago, AMD once again released the absolute banger of the CPU. On November 5, 2022, AMD Ryzen 9 5900x was introduced to a larger masses.

This CPU got popular and a lot of people were excited because AMD offered the biggest gen-to-gen jump in the performances (single-core) in years, which really showed us that AMD is doing a much better job at the moment than Intel.

The best part is that people who already had Ryzen 3000 series processors, and motherboards like X570 don’t even need to change it since this CPU is supported by them.

Since there is a lot of unanswered questions and sources aren’t in the same place, I will write you all the important aspects of this CPU and you will have a clear image of the pros and cons of this processor.

Is AMD Ryzen 9 5900x Good For Gaming? Short Topic Answer

AMD Ryzen 9 5900x is a fantastic processor for gaming. Although this CPU is more expensive than processors from the third ryzen generation, it will give you much better performance and longevity. If you pair it with a powerful Graphics card, you will have a PC that can run any program or video game.

Is AMD Ryzen 9 5900x a Good Option For You?

AMD Ryzen 9 5900x is a good option for you if your budget fits in. With 12 cores, 24 threads, and modern technology inside the chip, this processor is capable of any kind of multitasking or gaming in all resolutions and settings. For the best results, pair this processor with a GPU powerful enough.

If you want to see how well this CPU is in both 1080p and 1440p resolutions, keep reading!

How Good Is AMD Ryzen 9 5900x For 1080p Gaming?

For the first benchmark, I tested AMD Ryzen 9 5900x in 1080p resolution. The 1080p is the best way to see the real power of any processor since the CPU is doing the same job as the graphics card and both of them need to perform well in order to get good fps.

In order to get the most out of Ryzen 9 5900x, I paired it with the powerful AMD RX 6800 XT and tested them both in 5 different popular video games.

As you can see in the table below, Almost every game was tested at Ultra graphics settings, which will also load both of the components.

As excepted, all 5 games averaged more than 100 frames per second, which is really impressive. That tells us how good this processor is when it’s paired with a GPU that is also powerful.

Also, gaming at a higher refresh rate is more than possible if you have a suitable monitor.

Now, you should take a look at the table yourself.

Specs: AMD Ryzen 9 5900x, AMD RX 6800 XT, 32GB DDR4 3600 MHz, 1TB SSD AVERAGE FPS 1% LOW FPS
Assassin's Creed Valhalla (Ultra High settings - 1080p) 121 fps 85 fps
Cyberpunk 2077 (Ultra settings - 1080p) 103 fps 69 fps
Mafia: Definitive Edition (High settings - 1080p) 155 fps 89 fps
Red Dead Redemption 2 (Ultra settings - 1080p) 138 fps 100 fps
Watch Dogs: Legion (Ultra settings - 1080p) 103 fps 75 fps

How Good Is AMD Ryzen 9 5900x For 1440p Gaming?

The second benchmark that I did with AMD Ryzen 9 5900x was in 1440p resolution. Although in 2k resolution graphics card is doing more of the job than the processor, your GPU steel needs a powerful CPU as support.

Since the 2k resolution is the best mixture of both the video/image quality and the performance you are getting, a lot of people are deciding to play games at this resolution.

Once again I paired the AMD Ryzen 9 5900x with the AMD RX 6800 XT, and this time that GPU will have more work to do, but considering that it’s one of the best on the market, we won’t have any problems.

As you can see in the table below, all games and their graphics preset stayed the same as in the 1080p benchmark. The reason for that is because you should see the difference between the performances clearly.

Even this time the result was more than good. Every game averaged more than 60 fps and almost every one of them was around 100 fps on average. That tells us that this CPU is more than good for 2k gaming if you have a good GPU paired together.

Take a look at the table below.

Specs: AMD Ryzen 9 5900x, AMD RX 6800 XT, 32GB DDR4 3600 MHz, 1TB SSD AVERAGE FPS 1% LOW FPS
Assassin's Creed Valhalla (Ultra High settings - 1440p) 98 fps 67 fps
Cyberpunk 2077 (Ultra settings - 1440p) 74 fps 59 fps
Mafia: Definitive Edition (High settings - 1440p) 127 fps 81 fps
Red Dead Redemption 2 (Ultra settings - 1440p) 111 fps 86 fps
Watch Dogs: Legion (Ultra settings - 1440p) 77 fps 65 fps

Difference In Gaming Between AMD Ryzen 9 5900x and Intel I9 10900k

Since there is the whole debut about Ryzen 9 5900x and Intel I9 10900k, I wanted to test them both and compare the results. This test was interesting for me since Intel I9 10900k is Ryzen 9 5900x equivalent, at least it should be on the paper.

I will test them both in 7 different popular games, and to get the most out of them, I will pair them with the Nvidia RTX 3080. This way, both processors will have the same opportunity to perform well, and we will compare them.

Have in mind that every game that I tested had increased graphics settings.

As you can see in the table, we don’t have a clear winner this time. In some of the games, AMD Ryzen 9 5900x averaged more than Intel I9 10900k, but in some games, the Intel processor had more fps on average.

Since we can’t tell which processor is better based on the gaming performance, we will let you decide for yourself. If you like AMD, you should take a Ryzen 9 5900x. If you are an Intel fan or you already have the right motherboard for I9 10900k, you should buy it instead.

They are both fantastic processors, so don’t let the influencers change your mind.

Take a look at the table below.

Specs: Intel Core I9 10900k/AMD Ryzen 9 5900X, Nvidia RTX 3080 10GB, 32GB DDR4, 1Tb SSD AMD Ryzen 9 5900X - AVERAGE FPS AMD Ryzen 9 5900X - 1% LOW FPS Intel I9 10900k - AVERAGE FPS Intel I9 10900k -1% LOW FPS
Red Dead Redemption 2 (High settings - 1080p) 148 fps 111 fps 151 fps 112 fps
Mafia Definitive Edition (High settings - 1080p) 158 fps 102 fps 153 fps 99 fps
Microsoft Flight Simulator (High settings - 1080p) 90 fps 79 fps 90 fps 76 fps
Watch Dogs Legion (Ultra settings - 1080p) 118 fps 86 fps 115 fps 87 fps
Battlefield V (Ultra settings - 1080p) 194 fps 115 fps 197 fps 117 fps
