In 2019, AMD Released their new 12 cores/24 threads processor – AMD Ryzen 9 3900x. The main reason why the AMD Ryzen 9 3900x left a huge mark in the CPU Market is because of the price-performance ratio this processor has.
For the same money as Intel I9 9900k was going for, you could buy this processor instead which has more cores and threads than Intel I9 9900k (8 cores/16 threads).
They still have a similar price at the moment of me reading this post, which really tells us that both of these CPUs performed about the same over the years.
Today, I will try to test AMD Ryzen 9 3900x as much as I can, and give you all the information here for free. All you need to do is continue reading, and I guarantee you will find the answer to your question!

How Good Is AMD Ryzen 9 3900x In Gaming? Benchmarks
Since most people are reading this article in the first place because of the gaming test, I wanted to give you the info that you need. In the paragraphs below, I tested AMD Ryzen 9 3900x in both 1080p and 1440p resolutions paired with the powerful AMD RX 6800 XT, In order to get the most out of this Processor.
Let’s jump into gaming.
Is AMD Ryzen 9 3900x Good For 1080p Gaming?
For the first benchmark, I wanted to test AMD Ryzen 9 3900x in the most important resolution when it comes to testing the CPUs in gaming – 1080p. In order to get the best results, as I said, I paired Ryzen 9 3900x with the AMD RX 6800 XT, which is more than a good graphics card for 1080p gaming.
As you can see in the table below, I tested these two components together in 5 different games and every one of them was either on High or Very High graphics settings.
As expected, every one of them averaged more than 60 fps by far. That really shows us how good results this processor can give to us in 1080p resolution if it’s paired with a good graphics card. Of course, you don’t need a GPU this strong to achieve high fps in 1080p resolution.
My conclusion for 1080p is that you can also easily play at a higher refresh rate if you have a suitable monitor. This processor can give you enough power to get more than 144 or 240 fps in almost all games If you adjust the settings the right way.
Let’s cut the story, take a look at the table yourself.
Specs: AMD Ryzen 9 3900x, AMD RX 6800 XT, 16GB DDR4 3200 MHz, 1TB SSD | AVERAGE FPS | 1% LOW FPS |
---|---|---|
Red Dead Redemption 2 (High settings – 1080p) | 125 fps | 73 fps |
Battlefield 5 (High settings – 1080p) | 203 fps | 115 fps |
Assassin’s Creed Valhalla (Very High settings – 1080p) | 119 fps | 77 fps |
The Witcher 3 (High settings – 1080p) | 214 fps | 99 fps |
Shadow Of The Tomb Raider (Very High settings – 1080p) | 166 fps | 85 fps |
Is AMD Ryzen 9 3900x Good For 1440p Gaming?
For the second benchmark, I once again paired AMD Ryzen 9 3900x with an AMD RX 6800 XT, but this time I tested them together in 1440p resolution.
You may know that in 2k resolution, the processor is playing a smaller role and the GPU is the one that is doing most of the job. However, you will still need a great CPU support in order to achieve high fps in 1440p.
As you can see in the table below, ‘, and every one of them was tested with the same graphics details. I did that on purpose, so you can clearly see the difference in performance.
Although, if you take a look at both tables, there was a drop in fps, which is more than normal, Ryzen 9 3900x and RX 6800 XT performed really well in 1440p and they averaged more than 60 fps in all 5 games.
Every game felt smooth and gameplay was fluid, so the overall experience in 2k resolution is more than good.
Once again, gaming at a higher refresh rate is more than possible even in 1440p, if you adjust your settings the right way.
Take a look at the table.
Specs: AMD Ryzen 9 3900x, AMD RX 6800 XT, 16GB DDR4 3200 MHz, 1TB SSD | AVERAGE FPS | 1% LOW FPS |
---|---|---|
Red Dead Redemption 2 (High settings – 1440p) | 94 fps | 66 fps |
Battlefield 5 (High settings – 1440p) | 177 fps | 107 fps |
Assassin’s Creed Valhalla (Very High settings – 1440p) | 94 fps | 65 fps |
The Witcher 3 (High settings – 1440p) | 153 fps | 82 fps |
Shadow Of The Tomb Raider (Very High settings – 1440p) | 123 fps | 71 fps |
AMD Ryzen 9 3900x VS Intel Core I9 9900k – Gaming Comparison
Since both the AMD Ryzen 9 3900x and Intel I9 9900k are extremely good processors for most people, there is still a debate about which one is actually better since they are the biggest rivals.
Although the Intel Core I9 9900k is 1 year older and has fewer cores and threads than the AMD Ryzen 9 3900x, it’s still a more expensive CPU at the moment.
As you can see in the table below, I paired these two with the Nvidia RTX 2080, so we shouldn’t worry if we got the best performances out of both processors.
If you take a closer look at the table, you can see that Intel I9 9900k outperformed the AMD Ryzen 9 3900x by a few fps in every game that we tested. Considering the price difference, it’s expected to see such results, although the Ryzen 9 3900x is a newer CPU with more cores and threads.
Both of these two processors are very good, so you should decide on your own. Is it worth spending more money for a few fps more? If yes, then Intel I9 9900k is a CPU for you. If not, AMD Ryzen 9 3900x will still give you phenomenal results most of the time.
