Is AMD Ryzen 7 3800X Still Good? CPU Testing
Introduction
It has been exactly 3 years since AMD Released the Ryzen 7 3800x itself. Over time, this CPU didn’t achieve as great popularity as some other models from that generation, but it’s still known as one strong and capable CPU.
Since there is no place where you can find all the necessary information about this CPU, I will test it on my own and answer all questions.

Is AMD Ryzen 7 3800X Still Good? Short Topic Answer
AMD Ryzen 7 3800x is still a very good processor even 3 years since it was released by AMD. With 8 cores and 16 threads, this processor has a long and bright future. Pair this CPU with a good graphics card and fast RAM, and you will have a very good PC build that is capable of any task or video game
Is AMD Ryzen 7 3800X Good For Gaming?
Since gaming is probably the reason why you are here, I will try to give you the real image of how good Ryzen 7 3800x actually is. I will pair it with AMD RX 6800XT and test it in both 1080p and 1440p since there is no point in the 4k benchmark (GPU is doing all of the work).
Let’s jump into some gaming.
Is AMD Ryzen 7 3800X Good For 1080p Gaming?
The first benchmark that I did with AMD Ryzen 7 3800x was in the resolution that is probably the best when it comes to testing processor performances – 1080p.
In order to get the most out of Ryzen 7 3800x, I paired it with a powerful AMD RX 6800 XT, which is more than good for gaming.
As you can see in the table below, there were 5 popular video games that I played in this benchmark, and every one of them had increased graphics settings because most people play the 1080p resolution with High graphics details.
The results of these tests amazed me. The AMD Ryzen 7 3800x really performed well and there was no bottleneck between this processor and RX 6800 XT. In every game that I tested, these two averaged more than 100 fps, which tells us that gaming on a higher refresh rate is more than possible if you have a suitable monitor with either 144Hz or 240Hz
Take a look at the table below.
Spces: AMD Ryzen 7 3800x, AMD RX 6800 XT, 16GB DDR4, 1TB SSD | AVERAGE FPS | 1% LOW FPS |
---|---|---|
Battlefield 5 (Very High settings - 1080p) | 207 fps | 125 fps |
Shadow Of The Tomb Raider (Ultra settings - 1080p) | 167 fps | 105 fps |
Red Dead Redemption 2 (Ultra settings - 1080p) | 124 fps | 74 fps |
Assassin’s Creed Valhalla (Very High settings - 1080p) | 118 fps | 68 fps |
Far Cry New Dawn (Ultra settings - 1080p) | 119 fps | 74 fps |
Is AMD Ryzen 7 3800X Good For 1440p Gaming?
The second benchmark that I did was in the resolution which is considered a sweet spot for most gamers – 1440p. In 1440p resolution (or 2k), there is a mixture between the video quality and performance you are getting, so that’s why this resolution is played a lot.
Have in mind, that in 2k, the graphics card is the component with a bigger job and one that is doing the most, but you still need a lot of CPU power to maintain that performance.
Once again, I paired Ryzen 7 3800x with the AMD RX 6800 XT, which will show its power in 2k more than in the last test (1080p).
In order for you to clearly see the difference between these two resolutions, I once again tested the same 5 games on the same graphics settings.
In 3 out of 5 games, AMD Ryzen 7 3800x and RX 6800 XT averaged more than 100 fps, which is a fantastic result for 1440p resolution on increased graphics details.
Gaming on a higher refresh rate is once again more than possible in 2k If you pair Ryzen 7 3800x with a graphics card good enough.
Let’s cut the story, take a look at the table yourself.
Spces: AMD Ryzen 7 3800x, AMD RX 6800 XT, 16GB DDR4, 1TB SSD | AVERAGE FPS | 1% LOW FPS |
---|---|---|
Battlefield 5 (Very High settings - 1440p) | 187 fps | 106 fps |
Shadow Of The Tomb Raider (Ultra settings - 1440p) | 123 fps | 79 fps |
Red Dead Redemption 2 (Ultra settings - 1440p) | 97 fps | 63 fps |
Assassin’s Creed Valhalla (Very High settings - 1440p) | 93 fps | 62 fps |
Far Cry New Dawn (Ultra settings - 1440p) | 105 fps | 67 fps |
