It was the beginning of 2018. when Intel released our subject CPU for this day – Intel Core i7 8700. Although 4 and half years have passed, this processor is still used in a lot of computers nowadays.

Unfortunately, it has never got the level of popularity Intel aimed for, since its big brother Intel Core I7 8700k took the majority of the users with itself.

If we are looking at the overall performance, Intel Core I7 8700 isn’t that much worse than Intel Core I7 8700k, but a lot of people buy the (K) version even tho 70% of them don’t even overclock their processor at all.

Today, I will test this processor on my own, and give you the perfect answer to one question – How good is Intel Core I7 8700 In Gaming?

Stay with me and find out that and much more valuable information.

Is Intel Core I7 8700 Still Good For 1080p Gaming?

Since the majority of the people that are reading this post will probably come for the topic that is displayed in the title itself – gaming, I will try to test this processor the best I can.

It’s well known that the 1080p resolution is the best one when it comes to testing processors. That is why I didn’t benchmark this CPU in 2k or 4k resolutions today at all.

Considering that In 1440p and 4k, the graphics card itself is the one that is doing the most of the job, and the processor is there just for support.

However, I will test Intel I7 8700 in 1080p paired with 3 different graphics cards and compare it to Intel Core i7 10700 and AMD Ryzen 7 2700.

To cut The Story, Let’s Jum Into The First Benchmark!

Intel Core I7 8700 in Esports Games – 1080p

For the first benchmark, I wanted to try the Intel Core I7 8700 in video games that aren’t that hard to run and mostly require the same strength from both the processor and the graphics card.

The best games with such a description are E-Sport video games.

As you can see in the table below, I tested this processor in 5 of them. In order to get the most out of the Intel i7 8700 and make it perform the best way, I paired it with the powerful Nvidia GTX 1070 TI.

Every game out of the 5 that I tested was benchmarked on Ultra/Best graphics settings.

If you take a look at the table below, you can see that every one of them averaged more than 100 fps, unless the PUBG that had 99 fps on average.

That really shows us that this processor is more than good for 1080p gaming in E-sport games, which was expected.

Take a look at the table yourself!

Specs: Intel Core I7 8700, Nvidia GTX 1070TI, 16GB DDR4 3200 MHz, 1TB SSD AVERAGE FPS MIN FPS
PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds (Ultra settings - 1080p) 99 fps 63 fps
Fortnite (Epic Settings - 1080p) 126 fps 92 fps
Overwatch (Epic settings - 1080p) 101 fps 59 fps
Rainbow Six Siege (Ultra settings - 1080p) 180 fps 135 fps
CSGO (Max settings - 1080p) 244 fps 161 fps

Intel Core I7 8700 vs Intel Core I7 10700 – 1080p

For the second benchmark, I wanted to compare the Intel I7 8700 with Intel’s newer processor Intel Core I7 10700.

Once again, I benchmarked both of the CPUs in 1080p resolution, but this time I wanted to load both processors as much as I can.

Since I used the Nvidia RTX 2070 as the graphics card, there was no point in increasing the graphics settings, since Nvidia RTX 2070 would do all the work.

That is why I decreased the graphics details to Low in all 5 games that I compared these two processors.

As you can see in the table below, Intel I7 8700 had fewer fps on average in every game that I tested, which is expected, considering that Intel core I7 10700k is 2 years younger and it has more cores and threads (8 cores, 16 threads)

However, we can still tell that Intel I7 8700 performed really well in these games, considering that they are much harder to run than the first 5 I tested in the table above.

To cut the story, you should take a look at the table yourself.

Specs: Intel Core I7 8700/Intel Core I7 8700, Nvidia RTX 3070, 16GB DDR4 3200MHz, 1TB SSD Intel Core I7 8700 - Average FPS Intel Core I7 8700 - MIN FPS Intel Core I7 10700 - Average FPS Intel Core I7 10700 - MIN FPS
Assassins Creed Odyssey (Low settings - 1080p) 121 fps 93 fps 142 fps 112 fps
Cyberpunk 2077 (Low settings - 1080p) 97 fps 82 fps 119 fps 100 fps
Call of Duty Modern Warfare (Low settings - 1080p) 216 fps 154 fps 240 fps 175 fps
Days Gone (Low settings - 1080p) 183 fps 139 fps 201 fps 148 fps
Doom Eternal (Low settings - 1080p) 383 fps 306 fps 398 fps 336 fps

Intel Core I7 8700 vs AMD Ryzen 7 2700 – 1080p

For the last test, I once again compared the Intel I7 8700 with another CPU, but this time it’s an AMD processor – AMD Ryzen 7 2700.

Since AMD Ryzen 7 2700 is released at the begging of 2018. itself, just like the Intel Core I7 8700, I wanted to test them both, 4 years later and compare their results.

As you can see in the table below this paragraph, I tested these two processors in 5 different games, this time using the Nvidia GTX 1080.

The reason for switching the graphics cards in every benchmark is that you can see the difference between them in the same resolution.

The results of the test surprised me. Intel Core I7 8700 averaged more fps in every game that I played. Not by a lot, but that really shows us that Intel made a good CPU, considering that it performed better than the Ryzen processor in every game

You should take a look at the table below, and try to conclude if Intel Core I7 8700 is good enough for you.

Specs: Intel Core I7 8700/AMD Ryzen 7 2700, GTX 1080, 16GB DDR4 3200MHz, 1TB SSD Intel Core I7 8700 - Average FPS Intel Core I7 8700 - 1% LOW FPS AMD Ryzen 7 2700 - Average FPS AMD Ryzen 7 2700 - 1% LOW FPS
Battlefield 1 (Ultra settings - 1080p) 179 fps 146 fps 172 fps 144 fps
Assassin's Creed Origins (Very High settings - 1080p) 114 fps 89 fps 107 fps 85 fps
Far Cry 5 (Ultra settings - 1080p) 109 fps 76 fps 108 fps 77 fps
The Witcher 3 (Ultra settings - 1080p) 144 fps 112 fps 137 fps 103 fps
Fallout 4 (High settings - 1080p) 109 fps 78 fps 101 fps 72 fps

Unfortunately, you can’t overclock Intel Core I7 8700. Intel made it clear, that only the processors with the letter (K) in their names can be overclocked (Intel i9 9900k, Intel I9 10900k). However, the majority of the (K) processor owners waste their money and don’t even overclock their processors.

Is Intel Core I7 8700 Future-Proof?

Although the Intel Core I7 8700 is an older processor since its release in January 2018, it can still perform very well nowadays, and we hope so in the future years. With 6 cores and 12 threads, we can expect that Intel Core I7 8700 can be used for at least 3-4 years before it’s time for an upgrade.
